Upcoming schedule at senior center includes Hawaiian dance, Irish Shake

The Simi Valley Senior Center is offering new courses for people over 50.

A Hawaiian dance class will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays from March 8 to April 19 at the senior center.

The class stresses expressing song lyrics through hand gestures and understanding the history behind the dances.

The class will focus on the "hapa-haole" era in Hawaiian dance and will be taught by Kit Hanes. Registration fee is $24.

"Grandparent and Me: Special Days Together" will celebrate St. Patrick's Day early in an event on Tuesday, March 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Activities will include the preparation of a green Irish shake in a session led by Sue McElvogue.

Registration is $5 for two people and $10 for three to four participants.

A china painting class will run Fridays, March 28 through May 16 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Instructor Maria Covarrubias will help students apply paint to clear china ceramic pieces.

The finished product is a piece of artwork that can be displayed. Registration fee is $40.

A "Tea Towel Applique" class will be offered on Saturday, March 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Rebecca Reimer will teach the basics of how to make a tea towel or a teapot cozy.

Sewing machines are provided.

The $20 fee includes lab, materials and registration.
