B'nai Emet to host editor for Getty Museum tonight at 8

Dinah Berland, a poet and book editor for the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, will be the guest speaker at Congregation B'nai Emet's Sabbath service, at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, Jan. 11. A dessert oneg Shabbat will follow the service.

Berland will discuss her recent book "Hours of Devotion: Fanny Neuda's Book of Prayers for Jewish Women." Berland has translated and adapted this women's prayer book, originally penned in 1855, for a modern audience.

Congregation B'nai Emet is also offering two adult Jewish education classes.

• Rabbi Michele Paskow will teach "What does Judaism say about it? How Jewish beliefs and practices affect our lives" for five Sundays from 11 to 11:45 a.m. starting Jan. 27.

• School administrator Meridith Patera will lead "Love and violence in ancient Israel: Stories from the early prophets" on five Mondays from 7:40 to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 28.

The cost for class is $50 for congregation members, $65 for nonmembers, and half price for high school and college students.
