Simi Dog Park beginning to take shape
      With construction well underway on Simi Valley's first dog park, Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District officials are anticipating a March 2009 opening of the longawaited offleash dog park. Ed Hayduk, the district's assistant general manager, said he is happy with the progress so far, noting that 30 to 40 percent of the construction has been completed.

Mayor questions planning board decision
      Last Wednesday, two members of the Simi Valley City Council appealed a decision by the planning commission that allowed a Simi couple to keep eight cows, two pigs and 12 hens at their Bridle Path home.

Grant aimed at helping victims of domestic violence
      Interface Children Family Services has been awarded funding to continue providing crisis response for victims of domestic violence. Due to recent state budget cuts, Ventura County was at risk of losing funding to provide immediate assistance to domestic violence survivors.

Give the gift of prevention
      With the start of the holiday season, the Simi Valley Police Department will increase its patrols of local shopping centers and malls. The department's Reserve Officer Unit, Citizens on Patrol Program and Bicycle Patrol Team will augment the increased police presence.

2 teens booked for breaking into cars
      Two Simi Valley residents were arrested Wednesday after police determined they were responsible for breaking into several vehicles in a condominium complex located in the 2700 block of Erringer Road.

Christmas trees on sale at the Y
      The Simi Valley Family YMCA will sell Christmas trees through Dec. 21 at the Y at 3200 Cochran St. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays; and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Firefighters will be in the streets raising money
      For the first time, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties are uniting to help raise money to fight neuromuscular diseases at the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Fill the Boot fundraiser. Firefighters will fill their boots for "Jerry's Kids" from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., Dec. 13 at the intersection of Sycamore and Cochran in Simi Valley.

      The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum presents its 15th annual Christmas Around the World exhibit through Jan. 4 at the museum, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley. This year's exhibit has been expanded to more than 4,000 square feet of indoor gallery space.

Football league braces for Super Saturday

Bank gives $1,000 each to 22 county nonprofits
      Wells Fargo awarded 22 Ventura County nonprofits $1,000 each in unsolicited contributions at the company's annual Community Support Breakfast held at Los Robles Greens Golf Course in Thousand Oaks recently. Wells Fargo's contributions were up 18 percent from the previous year's annual gifting ceremony.

      The Ventura County Arts Council invites all public, private and parochial high schools, as well as home-schoolers, to participate in the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, a competition that engages high school students in the presentation of poetry through memorization and performance.
