Seat belt violators beware

The Simi Valley Police Department has been aggressively enforcing the state's seat belt and child safety seat laws during the "Click It or Ticket" campaign taking place through Sun., Nov. 30.

"Our officers are looking for seat belt violators like never before," said Lt. Joe May, who heads up the department's traffic division

May said in the first week of the campaign, which uses heavy enforcement and public education to help reduce deaths and injuries on state highways, officers handed out 73 seat belt citations.

Officers will continue to be on the lookout for motorists this weekend who are not buckled up and for teens and children not riding properly restrained. Officers will not accept excuses or give warnings. Tickets will be issued.

Tickets for the first violation range from $80 to $91 for adults and $330 to $401 to children under 16, depending on the county.

More than 280 law enforcement agencies statewide are participating in the "Click It or Ticket" campaign, which is being funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
