No change at the top

The winds of change that whipped through the country Tuesday night failed to ruffle Simi Valley.

Voters here decided to reelect the incumbents running in city council and school board races.

So what was the message that was sent?

Does it mean voters are satisfied with the direction in which our schools and city are headed? Were the challengers simply not up to the competition? Or were voters just too complacent to risk voting for a newcomer?

Whatever the reason, it's clear by the margins of victory that voters believe the current officeholders are still the best for the job.

We hope that these representatives don't view their new mandate as a reason to become complacent, but rather as a vote of confidence from the electorate that they are the right people to make necessary changes.

At city hall, it's time for our City Council and mayor to start taking an even tougher look at every development project that comes across their desks. While this council has always proven itself capable of making sure developers stick to Simi's strict design guidelines, we'd like to see them take a harder line against high density proposals and changes to the general plan.

On the other hand, it's time for the council to ease up on new ordinances aimed at "cleaning up Simi." The sign and anti-peddling ordinances were enough. If we try to sanitize the city too much it will lose that small-town country appeal so many of us hold dear.

When it comes to the school board, we have a list of changes we'd love to see, starting with making school board meetings available online. The operating costs are insignificant, and the equipment—used to put City Council meetings online—is already in place.

The status quo has been preserved in Simi Valley—now let's see if that's a good thing or a bad one. If it's the latter, expect the winds of change to return to Simi Valley two years from now.
