Resident thanks police, paramedics for getting her care she needed

2008-10-31 / Letters

I want to emphasize how terrific and hardworking our police department and paramedics are here in Simi Valley.

I was blessed that they found me on the evening of Tues., Oct. 14 when I experienced a severe diabetic reaction.

I was en route back to my home after picking up some grocery items. While driving home I missed my street and ended up parked in my truck off Stearns Avenue. I didn't feel well at all, but I was grateful I had enough strength and the presence of mind to pull over.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., my husband, Richard, and daughter Melissa tried to call me numerous times on my cellphone, but after several rings it went to my voice mail as I wasn't able to answer the calls. My family felt something was terribly wrong, so they called 911 at 7:30 p.m.

Immediately answering his 911 call, Office Purcell and Officer McColleen of the Simi Valley PD met Richard and decided on a first course of action—retracing my travel.

By 8 p.m. a wider search was coordinated from Simi Valley High School.

Within two hours I was located off Stearns, semiconscious. The paramedics and police started asking my name, my birth date, what day it was, if I was diabetic and other questions. I was lethargic and weak, but still awake.

Soon the paramedics arrived and they immediately tested my blood sugar, which was low, then quickly administered an IV of glucose.

Next thing I remember was that I saw my husband in the background and finally felt relieved.

Paramedics Mark Martinez and Lionel Lara then advised it was safe to transport me to Simi Valley Hospital. Their teamwork was great, and they explained to me that I need to be monitored at the hospital. I felt like I was in a daze or dream.

My nurse was Edie Walker. She was very friendly and compassionate, keeping me and my family informed every step of the way.

Edie monitored me for the next five hours until I was alert and talking.

Dr. Norman also helped, and she was very kind and understanding.

Richard, Melissa and I want to express our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who helped us through this most stressful and traumatic experience.

Our sincere thanks especially go to Officer Martinez, Officer Purcell and paramedics Lionel Lara and Mark Martinez. Yolanda Owen Simi Valley
