      Contestants for either the Miss Ventura County and Miss Ventura County's Outstanding Teen Competition are required to attend an orientation at 6 p.m. Mon., Nov. 3 at the Community Christian Church, 216 Moorpark Ave, Moorpark.

Free play reading for students
      A free play reading will take place at 7 p.m. Sun., Nov. 2 at the High Street Arts Center, 45 E. High St., Moorpark. The event is especially targeted at students. Classic short stories will be presented in a staged reading format.

Simi Elks host adult costume party tonight
      The Simi Valley Elks will present a Halloween party for adults at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Oct. 31, at the lodge, 1561 Kuehner Drive, Simi Valley. The lodge will be dressed with spooky decorations. Guests may partake of mystery food and punch as they dance to live music by the Original Renegades.

Martial artists perform good deeds
      The December Black Belt Team from Jason Flame's Tang Soo Do University has been participating in a variety of community service projects. In October the team conducted a Halloween Costume Drive to collect costumes that will be donated to Moorpark's Catholic Charities.

Simi Women's Chamber Choir to perform
      The Women's Chamber Choir will perform at 6 p.m. Sun., Nov. 2 at Lighthouse Bible Church, 4910 Cochran St., Simi Valley. The 15-member auditioned choir, directed by Dr. Carolyn Simons, represents various states and areas of study. The group performs music from every major stylistic period, relating spiritual truth to modern times.

Scouts will collect e-waste
      Boy Scout Troop No. 622 will host an e-waste collection and carwash fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., Nov. 8 at 4191 Cochran St., Simi Valley. A $6 donation per vehicle is suggested. Ewaste dropoff for electronic items will be managed by Neuwaste.com, rain or shine. Batteries, lighting and appliances will not be accepted.

Local student recognized in magazine contest
      Anna Barson, 14, of Simi Valley, received honorable mention in the May 2008 Cricket magazine art competition. In the contest, entrants were asked to depict a mother or father. Anna's name appears in the October issue.
