Medical examiners looking into cause of woman's deadly fall
Authorities are still investigating the death of a 42-year-old Simi Valley woman who fell from the second-story balcony of her home earlier this month.
According to Lt. Greg Riegert, Simi Valley Police officers responded to the 3400 block of Sunset Place on Oct. 12 at 1:30 a.m. and found Kristy Peterson lying on the driveway of her home with obvious head injuries.
Her husband told police she was standing on the balcony when she fell to the concrete driveway below.
Peterson was transported by ambulance to Simi Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead later that morning. The cause of death is listed as blunt force head injuries, officials said.
Ventura County Chief Dep. Medical Examiner James Baroni said that although an autopsy has been done, the case is pending.
"Typically, when the manner of death isn't initially obvious at autopsy, then we do further testing, maybe interviewing, and collect information to make it more clear for the doctor to determine the manner of death," Baroni said.
He added that the medical examiner-coroner's office is working in conjunction with the Simi Valley Police Department to determine the circumstances of the fatal fall.
A toxicology report will not be available for a few more weeks, possibly months. Baroni said his office may know in a couple of weeks if there was alcohol in Peterson's system, but it would take longer to determine if drugs were a factor in the fall.
