Republican Gallegly again a heavy favorite
Former Simi mayor running for 12th term in U.S. Congress
      U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly (RThousand Oaks) is looking to cinch his 12th term as representative for the 24th Congressional District, but challenger Marta Ann Jorgensen thinks it's time for a Democrat to take over. The 24th District covers inland Santa Barbara County and most of Ventura County, including Moorpark, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks.

Masry challenges Strickland again
      Although Assemblymember Audra Strickland has defeated her twice before, Democrat Ferial Masry is back to fight for a spot as the representative of the 37th District. Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks) replaced her husband as the 37th District Assembly member four years ago and wants to secure her post for her last allowable term.

      Michael Scamaldo, 52, of Simi Valley was found deceased in a trash container at 1518 Patricia in Simi Valley at 12:45 p.m. Oct. 16.

Getting in the last word during a sometimes contentious candidate forum for the Simi Valley Unified School District board of education on Tuesday night at city hall, incumbent Rob Collins pulled out the "experience" card.

Worker dies after being trapped in machine
      Jose Ayala, 47, of Simi Valley died of severe head trauma when he became trapped in an industrial die casting machine at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 at Vista Lighting Company in Simi Valley. According to police reports, the Ventura County Fire Department performed heavy rescue to extricate the victim from the machinery.

Medical examiners looking into cause of woman's deadly fall
      Authorities are still investigating the death of a 42-year-old Simi Valley woman who fell from the second-story balcony of her home earlier this month. According to Lt. Greg Riegert, Simi Valley Police officers responded to the 3400 block of Sunset Place on Oct. 12 at 1:30 a.m. and found Kristy Peterson lying on the driveway of her home with obvious head injuries.

Police say man fled scene of accident
      A Simi Valley man has been accused of being involved in an alcoholrelated hitandrun traffic collision with a power pole at about 3:06 a.m. Oct. 18 on Highway 118. According to the California Highway Patrol, Michael Ryan Herron, 25, was driving his pickup truck westbound on Highway 118, east of Santa Clara Avenue, at an unknown speed.
