'Bat-Boy: The Musical' hits Moorpark College stage

2008-10-17 / On The Town

Moorpark College presents the off-Broadway dark humor hit "Bat-Boy: The Musical" on the Main Stage, Performing Arts Center, 7075 Campus Road.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. Oct. 24, 25, 30 and 31, and Nov. 1, 7, 8, with matinees at 2 p.m. Sun., Oct. 26 and Nov. 2.

The production is directed by Katherine Lewis, along with musical and vocal director Marilyn Anderson and band director Dave Watkins. The show was named the best off-Broadway musical in 2001, winning both the Lucille Lortel Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award.

The plot is the present day discovery of a mysterious halfbat, half-boy found deep in a cave in West Virginia. Writers Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming and composer/lyricist Laurence O'Keefe were inspired by "BatBoy" stories in the headlines of the Weekly World News, a farcical tabloid.

The story centers on BatBoy's search for who he is and where he came from. He is driven by the desire to love and be loved as he struggles with the "beast within."

A college foundation fundraiser will take place Sat., Oct. 25 with a hosted Halloween party at 6 p.m. followed by the musical at 8 p.m. Tickets for the fundraiser are $150.

Regular show tickets are $8 to $16.
