Council considering law against bird feeding
Noncompliant neighbor forces city to create ordinance
      The City Council introduced an ordinance Monday night that would prohibit the intentional feeding of crows and ravens within city limits. The city was prompted to draft the ordinance because of a Simi resident who has been regularly feeding crows from his backyard in the Texas tract despite complaints from neighbors.

Help available to sufferers
      Residents seeking emotional support can contact the Simi Valley Police Department chaplains at (805) 583-6950. The Simi Valley Community Foundation is available to help residents set up and man age memorial funds in honor of their loved ones or other nonprofit charitable funds for families in need.

Community observance tonight at train stop
      A community observance remembering the victims of last week's Metrolink train collision will begin at 6:15 p.m. today, Sept. 19, at the Simi Valley Metrolink Station, 5050 Los Angeles Ave. Information will be available regarding support resources for family and friends of crash victims as well as ways in which community members can help.

Nonprofits: City accepting project requests for HUD money
      The city of Simi Valley is requesting project submissions for the Community Development Block Grant program. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development made funds available each year for the grant program. The city solicits projects from nonprofit organizations that provide direct benefit to primarily low and moderate-income residents of Simi Valley.

Drop in housing market forces city to tighten standards
      Acting on the recommendation of the city's affordable housing subcommittee, the City Council this week approved changes to Simi's First Time Homebuyer's Assistance Program due to declining housing prices and the overall poor condition of the real estate market.

State Senate candidate opens campaign office in Simi
      Former Assemblymember Hannah-Beth Jackson has opened a campaign office at 196003 Sequoia Ave., Simi Valley. The office will serve as home base for Jackson's volunteers in Simi Valley Jackson opened her office last Saturday after riding with Ventura County firefighters in the Simi Valley Days Parade.

      The annual National Day of Remembrance for Murdered Victims will be at 4:30 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 25 at Plaza Park, Fifth and "B" streets, Oxnard. The event will honor the memories of murder victims and recognize the impact of homicide on surviving family members and friends.

CROP hunger walks begin
      Humanitarian agency Church World Service has announced the opening of its 2008-09 CROP Hunger Walk season, during which hunger activists in some 2,000 communities across the nation will begin walking to raise money for the agency's domestic and global anti-hunger programs.
