Two brothers paint the town for a summer job

      Pulling a red Radio Flyer wagon with their supplies, two enterprising brothers, Caleb, 15, and Nathan, 13, set out to earn some extra money this school vacation. The boys worked painting house numbers on curbs. "We wanted to do this to earn some money over the summer," Caleb Porter said. "We just didn't want to sit around and do nothing.

      The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library together will present the third annual Simi Valley Freedom Walk from 5 to 6 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 11 at the library's courtyard, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley. The event will remember the victims of Sept. 11 and honor the troops overseas.

      A grand opening gala will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Wed., Sept. 3 at the new Nordstrom at The Oaks mall, 222 W. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks. The event will include preopening shopping, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, a fashion presentation and live music by swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

Take part in coastal clean up day
      The 24th annual Coastal Cleanup Day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Sat., Sept. 20 along the beaches, shorelines and inland waterways of California. Cleanups will take place at more than 750 sites on state beaches, bays, rivers, creeks, parks, roadsides and highways.

Waste a wish
      It all started in 1982 when I was 6 years old. I got into trouble and had to take a halfhour timeout. I remember thinking a half-hour meant an hour and a half, figuring that "half" was in addition to the hour. So when I sat down on the couch to do my stretch of time, I knew I was in for a long haul.
