Curling club hosting open house at Iceoplex

The nonprofit SoCal Curling Club will host an open house where people ages 12 and up can come and try the sport from 8 to 10:15 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 23 at Iceoplex, 131 W. Easy St., Simi Valley.

Curling is a Winter Olympic sport.

Players throw special granite stones that glide along the ice. Other players on the team use brooms to sweep the ice and guide the stone toward the target. The club uses Olympic sheets/targets.

The cost is $25, which includes instruction and all equipment.

Back-to-back nights of music at Simi Town Center

The Simi Valley Town Center will present two consecutive nights of free music concerts. Both shows are outdoors and free to the public.

•The Southern California R&B and blues band Reno Jones will play at 6 p.m. Thurs., Aug. 28 at the mall, 1555 Simi Town Center Way in Simi Valley.

Reno Jones was an awardwinner at the Monterey Blues Festival and headlined at B.B. King's Bluesapalooza.

•Emmy Awardwinning flamenco-Spanish guitarist Benise will perform from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Fri., Aug 29 at the mall.

Benise (pronounced Buhness-SAY) received widespread acclaim as the creative force behind the "Nights of Fire" world music and dance production that aired nationally on PBS.

The program won an Emmy Award in 2007.

For both shows, box dinners are available for $10 to $20 at Town Center eateries.

Inaugural poetry contest put on by artistic network

The Women's Artistic Network is accepting entries for its inaugural poetry contest.

Entries must be original and unpublished. Poetry can be traditional or free verse with a maximum of 50 lines.

Prizes are first place, $75; second place, $50; and third place, $25.

Entry fee is $5 per poem or $10 for three poems. Entries must be postmarked on or before Sept. 30.

Final concert of the summer coming to Lighthouse Church

Lighthouse Bible Church will have its final free outdoor concert for the year at 6 p.m. Sun., Sept. 7 at 4910 Cochran St., Simi Valley.

The event will begin with dinner, followed by the concert.
