Not impressed with fireworks enforcement

2008-07-25 / Letters

I read the letter from Simi Police Chief Mike Lewis in the Acorn July 18 and I would like to comment.

He tried to make it sound as if he was making an impact on the reduction in fireworks in Simi Valley on the Fourth of July. He certainly was not in my neck of the woods because it was unbearable for my family, my pets and neighbors.

My calls to the Simi police fireworks hotline were met in an argumentative way. It was evident that the police did not have any idea how to deal with this flagrant violation of the law.

They stated that if a police car was dispatched to a neighborhood, the violators would stop when they drove by.

I want Chief Lewis to know this method is not working for my neighborhood.

I was put through to a Sgt. Parks where I vented, I believe in vain.

Subsequent to July Fourth I led the police to a house that was currently firing off fireworks. No citation was issued.

Chief Lewis touts "16 enforcement actions" were taken on the Fourth of July. What does this mean?

I wish he would state the number of citations that were issued, if any. I want the public to know that if they feel the same as I do, to go public with their complaint.

Do not let this announcement from Chief Lewis fool you or go on unanswered. I have talked with people in other neighborhoods of Simi plus resident firemen and they told me they did not experience a reduction in fireworks violations.

All fireworks are unlawful and the police need a plan to stop this flagrant violation of the law. Sherrill Strothman Simi Valley
