Upset failing student was told to 'move on'
My grandson attended Sinaloa Middle School last year and failed.
When we went to his open house, we spoke to the math, science, history and English instructors and they said it would be a good idea to have him repeat the year.
After begging and pleading with my grandson he finally agreed and admitted that he was having too hard of a time and it would be better for him to repeat the year.
We went to the counselor's office to inform her of our decision- this is after receiving a letter in the mail saying that he was in jeopardy of being detained- and she said because of his age, 14, he would be better off going on to high school.
The fact that all of his teachers said it would be better to have him repeat the year and the fact that he finally agreed to repeat the year was not important to her either.
She deliberately lied and stated in front of all of us that Royal High School would be easier for him because they have special classes at a lower level than the junior high school had.
This is a total lie. My daughter took my grandson to Royal that week and they informed her that she was completely misled as to the curriculum and that they offered no classes as the counselor wanted us to believe they had.
Now my grandson is completely unwilling to go back to junior high and wants to go to high school. All this is going to do is excite him for the first couple of weeks and then he will once again give up because he is incapable of doing the work.
How could that counselor even suggest promoting a child, knowing that he is completely incapable of working at the level he was in, much less trying to work at a high school level?
I now have no faith in the Simi Valley School District, especially Sinaloa Middle School. I believe they wanted him to go on so as not to dirty their reputation.
Will their reputation not be jeopardized more when after a week or two he is totally discouraged and decides just to give up?
I hope that you will print this letter so other concerned taxpayers can see what our school system is capable of as far as messing with kids' heads and deliberately lying to protect their names. Diane White Simi Valley
