Local campaign finance statements will hit the city's website later this summer following approval from the Simi Valley City Council.

At its June 23 meeting, the City Council approved a proposal recommended by the city's eGovernment committee to post summaries of campaign contributions for all council candidates for public review.

Laura Behjan, assistant city manager, said the summaries will be posted as candidates submit their statements during the candidate filing period, which opens July 14.

"We will be implementing (the online postings) as we enter the election period this summer," Behjan said.

She said the summaries will most likely be placed under the city clerk's section of Simi's recently improved website, www.simivalley.org.

Mayor Pro Tem Michelle Foster is happy the council approved the proposal.

"I think it's a great idea," she said. "Anything we can do to keep government transparent to the citizens is important, and this is one more way of making information accessible to people."

Currently, complete campaign finance statements are available for viewing at the city clerk's office in city hall, and copies of the statements can be requested for a fee.

Foster said that for legal reasons only partial statements- including the cover page and summary page of the disclosure statements- will be posted online, but the more detailed reports will still be available at city hall.
