Teen arrested on suspicion of attempted sexual assault
Simi Valley police arrested a 16-year-old boy and charged him with residential burglary and attempted sexual assault early Saturday morning, less than a day after the crime was reported.
The juvenile, whose name is being withheld, was arrested Saturday, June 14 in the 2800 block of Cochran Street at about 1:30 a.m. and was booked at Ventura Juvenile Hall.
Sgt. Adam Darough of the Simi Valley Police Department said detectives are still investigating the boy's background and will not take him to court until his age and citizenship are confirmed.
"We're still working on a positive (identification) of the subject; as per his statement, he is in the country illegally," Darough said. "If he is here illegally, we can't check with a birth certificate. We are still trying to substantiate who he is."
At about 3:35 a.m. on June 13, police received a call from a 20yearold Simi Valley resident of the 1500 block of Patricia Avenue. The woman, whose name has been withheld, told police that someone had broken into her home through a bedroom window while she was asleep.
The suspect allegedly attempted to choke the woman but fled on foot through a window when she resisted.
According to Darough, police recovered a muddy shoeprint at the scene near the window.
"In interviewing possible witnesses in the area, one was able to provide a description of somebody they had seen, which was close to our suspect description," Darough said. "A surveillance of the area led to this suspect, who we then interviewed and subsequently arrested for this crime."
Police were unable to confirm whether or not the boy was a student of the Simi Valley Unified School District.
