Santa Susana standout seniors
Steffi Khurana Steffi Khurana, daughter of Gurvinder and Rashvinder Khurana, is the senior class valedictorian. She achieved highest honors in the school's academies of science and humanities, and honors in math.
While at Santa Susana, Steffi's accomplishments earned her several awards, including AP Scholar with Distinction, the United States Achievement Academy's International Foreign Language Award and the President's Award for Educational Excellence. She was also a recipient of a Golden State Seal Merit Diploma.
The 18yearold served as president of the California Scholarship Federation, treasurer of the Key Club and commissioner of community service in leadership. She was a mock trial lawyer during her sophomore year.
After graduation, Steffi plans to attend Payanand Medical College in Punjab, India.
"Within 10 years, I plan to have graduated from medical school and to begin traveling around the globe to exotic locations, maybe even treating people as I travel," Steffi said. "Hopefully, by then, I will have plans of settling down in California and then making a difference locally."
Kurtis Guy Kurtis Guy, son of Stephen and Kassandra Guy, was involved in Santa Susana's theater department throughout high school, serving as technical director for countless performances.
President of the Stage Craft Club his senior year, Kurtis was in charge of the technical aspect of the Troubadour Advisory Program and received the Outstanding Technical Achievement Award. He spent three years at the Church of Rocky Peak doing technical arts, eventually becoming the church's IT administrator.
His senior project was to become an EMT, so Kurtis, 18, completed the basic course at Moorpark College and passed the National Registry of EMT exam in January 2008.
Kurtis said he plans to work as a paramedic to pay his way through college before going to medical school to become an emergency department trauma physician.
When asked who his biggest influence was, Kurtis replied, "I don't think I can narrow it down to just one person. So many people have had such a profound affect on me as a person it wouldn't be fair to say just one."
Kelsey Kasten Kelsey Kasten, daughter of Bart and Charlotte Kasten, was active in student government at Santa Susana. She served as ASB treasurer her senior year.
She was a member of the California Scholarship Federation and the Key Club and participated in Leadership Class all four years of high school.
A nine-year member of Dance Unlimited's competition dance team, Kelsey, 17, started her own dance group at her church, which she called "Resurrection Dancers."
She taught the girls dance and choreography and directed them in performances at church services.
Kelsey, who finished high school with a 4.28 GPA, said her favorite class was AP History with Peter Huybers. After graduation, she will attend UCLA and hopes to become an orthodontist.
"Both of my parents have had the biggest influence on my life," Kelsey said. "Since the very beginning of my education they taught me the value of learning and trying your best Their encouragement and teaching is the reason I have been successful in high school."
Michael Reynolds Michael Reynolds, son of John and Patricia Reynolds, was president of Santa Susana's gaming club.
The 17-year-old, who took nine AP classes this year, earned high honors in science and computer science.
At Santa Susana he and a friend programmed a Web game they called "World of Conquest."
Michael said his favorite class in high school was programming and computer science with Mark Sheinberg.
"He's my mentor and he pushed me to take my skills to a higher level. He's the best teacher I've ever had and I partly attribute my success to him," Michael said.
Michael listed his girlfriend Emily as having one of the biggest influences in his life.
"She is always interested in what projects I've been doing and gives me support," he said.
After graduation, Michael will attend Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo. In 10 years he sees himself just finishing his PhD and doing top secret research in nanotechnology or research and development for the CIA.
Katie Stevenson Katie Stevenson, daughter of Gary and Corrine Stevenson, was a recipient of the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma and the President's Education Award.
She earned a 4.2 GPA, achieving highest honors in humanities and honors in math.
This year's ASB secretary, Katie was vice president of her junior class and the commissioner of the House of Representatives in Leadership Class. A lifetime member of the California Scholarship Federation, Katie said her favorite class in school was English.
"I have always enjoyed reading, writing and analyzing literature and how it relates to my life," she said.
Katie, who will attend California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks in the fall, said in 10 years she hopes to have a successful career in whatever field she ends up in "as long as I'm happy."
