Council will vote on recommendation to provide greater access
By Darleen Principe darleen@theacorn.com

Local campaign finance statements will soon be available online for public review if the Simi Valley City Council approves a recommendation to post summaries of campaign contributions for all council candidates on the city's website.

Laura Behjan, assistant city manager, said the City Council will discuss the proposal at their June 23 meeting.

"Right now it's a possibility," Behjan said. "We just went to the e-Government committee last week and they have made a recommendation for the City Council to consider."

Currently, campaign finance statements are available for viewing at the city clerk's office in city hall.

Copies of the statements may be requested for a fee.

If the recommendation is approved, statements will be accessible through the city's website at www.simivalley.org.

Councilmember Glen Becerra said that making the statements more accessible will aid in making the "people's government more transparent."

"Everything the council does is always within the law and within the limits," Becerra said. "It always abides by not only state law, but also the local law that we put into place for ourselves.

"We're passing ordinances and laws and policy that keep us more accountable to the public."

The June 23 meeting of the council begins at 6:30 p.m.
