Kudos to the City Council for passing no-fliers ordinance
Recently I read that fines will now be charged for anyone who chooses to distribute any printed material on a motor vehicle from the article "No-fliers ordinance adopted without opposition" (Acorn, May 16).
For this, I would like to take the liberty to congratulate the City Council for making such a move and say that if this is the level of issue that we consider of importance, the city must be very well off.
Even so, I propose that we can go a step further to help keep the city free of unwanted trash.
Perhaps my point can best be made by looking at a telephone pole near an intersection, riddled with staples and nails to the point that they are just as much a part of it as the wood it's made out of. From this observation, I would propose that restrictions on other forms of distributing printed material be taken into consideration, such as those affixed to these poles.
I do not mean to completely ban such advertisement. I would think it reasonable to require registration of such forms of advertisement with a commitment to take them down by a certain date with the penalty of a fine if they are not.
I hope that the city will continue to take these little actions to make it a better place to live one step at a time. Wesley Hauwiller Simi Valley *Editor's Note: The city of Simi Valley banned temporary signs- such as those affixed to telephone poles- in the public right of way in July 2006.
