I had occasion to be at Simi Valley City Hall on Monday, May 12.

I watched the proceedings and the various Commendations and Proclamations that were on the agenda that evening. No. 5 on the agenda was the presentation of a Proclamation declaring May 15, 2008, as "Peace Officers Memorial Day."

I watched as Mayor Paul Miller handed this proclamation to one of the police officers and listened while he talked about how these police officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe.

Many of us take our police department for granted. We live in a safe city, but it is only safe because of our great Simi Valley Police Department.
