Law enforcement sets sights on DUI offenders

The California Highway Patrol will begin the Memorial Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) at 5 p.m. tonight, Friday, May 23, and continue through midnight on Mon., May 26.

Up to 80 percent of all CHP officers will be out working the road over the holiday weekend to help ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.

During the 2007 Memorial Day MEP, 37 people were killed in collisions on California roadways. In addition, CHP officers arrested 1,614 people for driving under the influence.

CHP has these reminders for all motorists: Don't speed. Don't drink and drive. Don't forget to wear a seatbelt.
