Open garages are a target for crooks
      The Simi Valley Police Department reminds residents to keep their garage doors closed and locked when not in use. An open garage door is an invitation to a criminal. Thefts from garages with open doors are a common occurrence.

Simi officers win MADD awards
      Two Simi Valley Police officers were presented with the MADD Deuce Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving at an awards breakfast in Culver City on March 20. The Los Angeles/Ventura County Chapter of MADD commended Officers Steven Philbrook and Howard Horwitz for their effrots to remove impaired drivers from Simi Valley roadways in 2007.

      Assembly Bill 1842, which directs the Department of Parks and Recreation to establish the Santa Susana State Park Advisory Committee to help create the Santa Susana State Park, recently passed out of the Assembly Water Parks and Wildlife Committee.

2 residents killed during deadly weekend on highways
Car flipped at interchange of 101 and 23
      Seven people died in a 15-hour time period on Ventura County freeways and train tracks last week, though none of the deaths appear to be related. "It's completely random," said Capt. Ross Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

      The Simi Valley Office of Emergency Services is accepting applications for the next Community Emergency Response Training class. The CERT program educates residents and employees of local businesses to be selfreliant following a disaster.

Transportation task force yielding results
      Highway 118 Safety Task Force members met last week in Simi Valley to review progress made in 2007 and discuss goals for 2008. The group, spearheaded by Ventura County Supervisor Peter Foy, is composed of representatives from several state and county agencies as well as community members from Moorpark and Somis.
