Assistance centers offering help in obtaining stimulus package rebates
Internal Revenue Service Assistance Centers in the counties of Kern, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Ventura will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29 to help people file tax returns in order to receive their economic stimulus payment, commonly referred to as a rebate.
IRS personnel will answer questions and help file tax returns, which must be done in order to receive a stimulus payment.
The following IRS offices are among 300 locations nationwide opening their doors for the "Super Saturday" event:
•751 Daily Drive, Camarillo •300 N. Los Angeles St., downtown Los Angeles
•1332 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara
•6230 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys-San Fernando Valley
The above offices provide regular service from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
In addition, during the tax filing season, more than 180 free tax assistance sites operate in the four-county area. Some serve taxpayers on a walk-in basis while others require an appointment.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites help people who earn less than $40,000, many of whom could qualify for the economic stimulus payment and the earned income tax credit. To locate a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site, call the IRS at (800) 906-9887.
The AARP Tax Aide Program offers free tax help to taxpayers who are 60 and older.
Seniors who normally do not file a tax return but had at least $3,000 in Social Security benefits will need to file a Form 1040A in order to receive this year's economic stimulus payment. To locate the nearest AARP Tax Aide site, call (888) 227-7669.
