School chiefs will address budget concerns at community forum
      A volunteer community group called Californians Organized to Rescue Education (CORE) has joined forces with the 12th District Parent-Teacher Association to oppose Gov. Schwarzenegger's proposed education budget cuts. The two groups will host a fivedistrict superintendents' forum at 4:30 p.m.

Program aims to provide incentive for selfimprovement
      The Ventura County Sheriff's Department is implementing a new program in which jail inmates may be eligible to receive credits for school, vocational training and substance abuse courses. These jail credits will be used to reduce their court sentences.

Resident convicted of filing forged documents
      Simi Valley resident Aubulghasem Ahmadpour, 58, was recently convicted of seven felony counts of filing forged instruments, and passing forged instruments with intent to defraud. The evidence presented during the trial revealed that Ahmadpour became involved in a series of business disputes with three different sets of victims.

More rate increases in store for Metrolink
      Last year, Metrolink's board of directors approved annual fare adjustments of 3.5 percent for three years. Due to the rising cost of diesel fuel, scheduled increases in costs for operating services contracts and new startup costs for additional passenger cars in 2009, the board is considering a fare increase of up to 7.

Girls create makeshift memorial to remember a friend
     GRIEVING- Local resident Marisa Skoczylas, 17, strings a garland of silk flowers across a handmade sign as Cortney Jones, 22, lights a candle beneath an impromptu memorial created on a railway post near the train crossing at Los Angeles and Sequoia avenues on Tuesday. The girls' close friend, age 17, was killed at the crossing last Friday when she was struck by an Amtrak train. The Ventura County Medical Examiner's office has since ruled the incident a suicide. County transportation head says sales tax may help relieve traffic
      The head of the county's transportation agency said last week a half-cent sales tax in Ventura County could ease traffic-clogged freeways and get commuters home earlier.

County fire department puts out call for volunteers
      The Ventura County Fire Department is seeking persons for the Volunteers in Prevention program, which assists with a variety of community education tasks and helps the department during major emergencies. The VIP program will conduct a volunteer orientation from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 3.

Homeland Security has grants available to assist first responders
      The United States Department of Homeland Security announced recently that the application period for (FY) 2008 Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG). Applications began being accepted Monday, March 3. The deadline for submission is Friday, April 4.
