The third annual Ventura County Honor Jazz Band Concert, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, will showcase 35 jazz musicians from seven Ventura County high schools.

The concert will take place at Moorpark High School Performing Arts Center, 4500 Tierra Rejada Road in Moorpark.

For the first time this year, two honor bands have been selected to allow more students to participate.

The Ventura County Jazz All Stars will augment the traditional Ventura County Honor Jazz Band. A separate guest conductor will lead each band.

Student performers were selected in February by audition on the basis of musical preparedness of selected repertoire.

High schools represented by this year's students are Moorpark, Nordhoff, Oaks Christian, Royal, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Westlake.

Four rehearsals are held in preparation for the concert.

Kyle Luck, director of bands at Pasadena City College, will conduct the Honor Jazz Band.

He is the former director of instrumental music at Westlake High School and a professional percussionist.

Luck also directs the Tournament of Roses Honor Band, and has instructed the USC Trojan Marching Band and the 1993 World University Games Marching Band.

James Mooy will conduct the Jazz All Stars. Mooy has been affiliated with Santa Barbara City College since 1995, where he directs the school's jazz ensemble, the Good Times Jazz Ensemble, and the Symphony Orchestra in addition to his teaching duties. He has toured the U.S. and Japan as a professional trumpet player. He is also in demand as a clinician and adjudicator for numerous festivals.

The concert is open to the public. Tickets at the door are $5 general admission and $3 for students and seniors.
