Concert of big band music to benefit Council on Aging

A concert featuring music from the 1930s, '40s and '50s will be held in the Simi Valley Senior Center's multipurpose room on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.

Santa Susana High School senior Michael Vannelli and his Big Band of Renown will perform a concert titled "The Best Is Yet to Come."

Tickets will be $5 at the door. Seniors over 55 and children 10 and under will be admitted at no charge.

Proceeds will go to the Simi Valley Council on Aging. The event is sponsored by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District.

The senior center is located at 3900 Avenida Simi, Simi Valley.

Wells Fargo gave generously to Simi nonprofits in '07

Wells Fargo awarded $13,000 to various nonprofit organizations in Simi Valley in 2007.

Donations supported groups such as Rotary Club of Simi Valley, Simi Valley Police Foundation, Simi Valley Music Boosters, Santa Susana Performing Arts Booster PACT, Valley Sports Foundation, YMCA Simi Valley, Institute of Equestrian Therapy, Saint Rose of Lima and Community Pregnancy Clinic of Simi Valley.

With three banking stores in the Simi Valley community, Wells Fargo is one of the largest corporate contributors to nonprofit organizations in Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties, giving more than $10.5 million to organizations and schools.

Nationally, the company contributed more than $91.8 million to more than 14,000 nonprofit organizations and schools.

Wells Fargo team members locally also reported more than 20,200 volunteer hours serving nonprofit organizations in their communities and raised more than $3 million for the company's Community Support/ United Way Campaign.

B&G Club set to honor its most dedicated volunteers

The Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley will announce their 2007 award winners and unveil their 2008 board of directors at the 38th annual recognition luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at the Posada Royale Hotel, 1775 Madera Road in Simi Valley.

The club will honor the volunteers who help achieve their mission to provide a safe, positive place for children in the community.

The Youth of the Year Award will also be presented to a club member who has exhibited outstanding qualities and leadership skills throughout the year.

The luncheon costs $40.

Champion public speaker will share secrets of the trade

Lance Miller will present a seminar on "Learning the secrets of creating and delivering a champion speech" from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Simi Valley Town Center Community room, second level of tower office. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Miller is the 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking and a Distinguished Toastmaster. He will discuss the critical parts of a speech, finding one's voice, speech structure and practicing a speech.

The event will include a questionandanswer session and refreshments. Attendees receive a special discount on education materials. The cost is $10.
