Several new filing programs available at no cost to taxpayers
      As local residents prepare to file their 2007 income tax returns, state and federal officials unveiled new programs, promised better service and reminded taxpayers to be aware of commonly overlooked credits. Customer service from the state Franchise Tax Board will be improved this year, said John Chiang, California Tax Board chair and state controller.

City works to settle tree disputes
      Sharon Edwards has lived in the same house in the 5500 block of Katherine Street for 23 years. The last four have given her a headache. Edwards has pleaded with the city to remove the mature sycamore in front of her residence because its roots have damaged the sidewalk and constricted the flow of water into her home.

Park district has upcoming events for those 50-plus
      The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District is offering new events and classes for people 50 and over. Those who enjoy the card game hearts can participate in a Valentine's Hearts Tournament at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13. The entry fee is $5, and prizes will be awarded.

Simi students take home honors at annual Reflections program awards ceremony
     Photos by WENDY PIERRO Acorn Newspapers REFLECTIONS OF TALENT- Royal High School junior Tamara McCarty, 16, above, and Lana Marie Alicata, 16, right, a junior at Simi Valley High, were among the Ventura County students who won awards at the National PTA Reflections program gallery exhibit reception and awards celebration Tuesday night at the Ventura County Office of Education in Camarillo. This year's theme was "I Can Make a Difference By . . ." Twenty-four students were given the award of excellence for their work and will go on to compete at the national level. McCarty won an award for dance choreography and Alicata won for music composition.

Unique delivery
      MAKING BULLIES DISAPPEAR- Merrill Merman, above, performs a magic trick onstage with the help of 7-year-old Franco Candiotti last Friday night at Katherine Elementary School in Simi. The trick was part of Merman's comedy and illusion show called "The Magic of Being Bully Free," a program where kids and parents were taught about understanding and dealing with bullies.

Beloved music teacher loses battle with cancer
      For more than 20 years, Debra McCarthy taught piano and music theory to students in Simi Valley. The music faded on Dec. 21 when McCarthy, 51, died after a valiant battle with breast cancer. This Sunday, Jan. 27, family and friends will bid farewell to the beloved music teacher with a memorial service at OneSpirit Center for Conscious Living on Erringer Road.
