Water is a resource we must protect I was glad to read the article stating that the water treatment plant had been approved. Recently, much of the focus has been on fossil fuels running low. There have been investigations and experiments with ethanol as a source of energy for decades, not to mention the ridiculous amounts of oil we import. Coal is also a nonrenewable resource that we continue to consume more of and more rapidly each year. There have been many reports on this, studies, documentaries, television specials galore. Only relatively recently has the matter of fresh water been brought to the front of the list, and not a moment too soon. Around 2.5 percent of the water on this planet is fresh. Seventy percent of that is frozen in the polar ice caps and other floating masses of ice. The other is spread throughout groundwater, which we can't use in Simi. The water treatment plant is a great step forward, and I'm glad that we're finally doing something to lessen our dependency on the reservoirs. Alysha Southworth Simi Valley |
