Rotary continues tradition of bike giveaway

For the seventh year, the Rotary Clubs of Simi Sunrise and Simi Valley recently assembled and donated bicycles to children in Simi Valley.

This project was started in 2000 when 100 bicycles were donated. This year 250 bicycles were donated.

The bicycles are distributed to families that would not otherwise be able to afford them. The recipients are selected by several churches, synagogues and other charitable organizations.

The Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Simi Valley each donated $3,500 for purchasing the bikes and helmets.

They were joined by the Rotary Club of Simi Sunset in assembling the bikes at the Boys & Girls Club. More than 70 volunteers, adults and children took part in the assembling.

B&G Club gets large donation from Teleflex

The Teleflex Foundation recently provided an $8,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley in support of the club's afterschool homework help and tutoring program, Project Learn.

"Our long-term goal is to help young people develop selfmotivation in pursuing scholastic success. As children perform increasingly well in school, they become increasingly proud of themselves and work harder to achieve greater success," said Linda White, CEO of the club.

The Teleflex Foundation began in 1979 with $50,000 seed money from Teleflex Incorporated. Since then, more than $5 million has been granted in the communities where Teleflex has facilities.

Moorpark College closing up for winter break

The fall semester has ended at Moorpark College. All college offices will be closed for winter holiday beginning Dec. 22 and will reopen Wednesday, Jan. 2.

The first day of classes for spring semester is Monday, Jan. 7.

Registration for the spring semester will continue online during the holiday closure. Walkin registration begins Jan. 2, and students in grade 9 can register beginning Jan. 7.
