Property tax law needs to be changed Surprise. The king has decided the county needs more money, and your property tax is going up ("Be on the lookout for property tax bills," Simi Valley Acorn, Oct. 26). Many would-be home sellers are finding that their homes are not worth what they thought. The king agrees: Their homes are worth more. The farmers who lost last year's crop due to the freeze may likewise be surprised to find that crop-failure increased their farm's value. The property tax is unfair, arbitrary and capricious. When the king decides the treasury needs more money, the serfs must pay more, regardless of their income. The reason politicians love it is that it is hidden. If local government funding came directly out of your paycheck, you would know how much your government really costs. I don't know about all property owners, but my tax comes out of my income. If you do not own, but instead rent, the property tax still comes out of your income . . . unless you are independently wealthy. It's just hidden in your rent. The king needs more money. Be on the lookout for a rent increase. Peter Wilson Simi Valley |
