8th-grader earns Eagle Scout Award

Broc J. Gerritsen, 13, of Simi Valley was recently honored with the highest award in Boy Scouting, the Eagle Scout Award.
He is a member of Troop 698, sponsored by Knights of Columbus.
Broc started as a Cub Scout in Pack 3688 at age 6. He earned the awards the Light Of Christ and Parvlui Dei. He received 20 activity badges to earn the Arrow of Light honor and advanced to Troop 698.
He is a member of the Order of the Arrow and earned 45 merit badges. His leadership roles include patrol leader, senior patrol leader, historian and instructor. He is certified in CPR and has participated in three camporees and three summer camps.
For Broc's Eagle Scout project, he led a group of seven volunteers in building two concrete precast benches and installing them adjacent to the picnic area at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.
Broc acknowledges Jeff Arellano of CM Concrete for donating supplies and advice on the project, American Masonry for supplies and tools, and Alfred Johnson from the Reagan Library for his input.
Project volunteers included Craig Heidprien, Branden Gillespie, Paul Tuttle, Cole Hunt, Eion Martin, Matthew Hunt and Eric Heidprien. A total of 144 volunteer hours were used on the project.
Broc is a eighth-grader at St. Rose of Lima School in Simi Valley and the son of Peggy Smith of Moorpark and Jamie Gerritsen of Simi Valley.
