City must make sure it has money to rebuild A major fear of mine is the fact that if we should have another earthquake like we had in 1994 or fires like we have been having the last few years; do we have the money to be able to rebuild? Remembering the destruction of Simi Valley High School's gymnasium, the fires that surrounded Moorpark College, the water spout in front of Sequoia Junior High School, the collapse of the parking garage and part of the mall structure at Northridge makes me wonder if we have set aside enough funds to be able to rebuild Simi Valley. Would we need to pass another bond issue like the one that was passed a few years ago to have to support rebuilding? My fear is that we would have to close down the town or go into funds that have been set aside for other projects so the city could be rebuilt. I feel that an audit from an outside firm of our emergency funds is in order to make sure we have adequate funds available in case there is a need that is immediate after the disaster. To have to depend on the federal government to come up with money has proven that it is a long drawn-out process. With the disaster in New Orleans, it has been proven that we need to have our own disaster fund available so we can protect and repair our town ourselves. Barbara Kiely Simi Valley |
