Rapid intervention needed on Yosemite Avenue In response to Mr. Kostos' letter regarding traffic enforcement in The Bluffs, I say . . . don't hold your breath for any change. Yosemite Avenue north of the 118 is the speedway of Simi. As a resident of this area, I, along with many other people, use Yosemite to take daily walks. Many cyclists also use the road. Over the last seven years, with the influx of development and residents, Yosemite has turned into a veritable Indy 500. I personally have witnessed on separate occasions two cars spinning out of control and hitting the curbs, and three accidents from cars pulling out from side streets and being plowed into by speeders. I have not sat back in apathy. I have gone to the traffic division of Simi and investigated if stop signs or lowering the speed limit could be done. The response: The state sets the speed limit for Yosemite. If the city lowers it and someone was ticketed, that individual would cite the state speed limit of 45 and win their case. The response to stop signs was: Stop signs are used for traffic control, not to slow traffic. I ask, isn't slowing traffic a type of traffic control? I have personally approached the police officers investigating the accidents and requested greater enforcement of the speed limit laws. I invite you to stand on Yosemite Avenue between 5:30 and 9 a.m. and then again from 4 to 9 p.m. You'll want to have a helmet and crash suit on. You cannot cross Yosemite anywhere except Alamo and Evening Sky; there are no crosswalks for us. My message to these drivers: Slow down! There is going to be a fatality one day and then the city and the residents will wake up and realize how dangerous Yosemite has become as well the Bluff area of Simi. What other methods are there to slow the drivers down? We need the intervention now. We need to change what does not work for the areas before someone loses their life. Carol Jackson Simi Valley |
