Being homeless doesn't make a person a criminal First off, let me express my appreciation for the Acorn- the only local paper in Simi Valley. I would like to comment on the Sept. 28 article on the "Duck Park" revitalization. I object to the innuendo in the sentence regarding safety. Eliav Appelbaum states, ". . . safety is a major concern at the Rancho Simi Park site, which attracts homeless people." This seems to infer that those who are unable to live in a building are a threat to the safety of others. I beg to differ with this perception. Sure, there are some of those on the streets who are a threat, but there are many more who are not homeless who commit crimes of a violent nature. I am not speaking theoretically as I see and visit with around 75 to 100 each week who are living such a lifestyle, and they are as caring and peaceful as they come. Instead of making assumptions that the homeless are dangerous and undesirable, you should get to know them and not make knee-jerk judgments about them. Gene Haury Simi Valley |
