Simi-based seminar will teach the basics of blueprints

The Greater Los Angeles and Ventura County Building Industry Association of Southern California Women's Council will host a "Navigating Blueprints" seminar from 9:30 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 12 at the Countrywide office in Simi Valley.

The event is geared for novices who have no or very little knowledge of reading blueprints. The seminar's objectives are to help one understand the special language spoken in a set of blueprints and to learn to navigate its special markings. Beginners will feel comfortable with understanding the symbols, denotations, grid lines, section marks, elevation lines, scale, sheet numbers and legends that appear on an average set of blueprints.

This seminar is for those who may be remodeling their home, planning to build their own home soon, work in the construction industry or simply wish to expand their knowledge.

The class was developed by Jan and Michael Frazier of Frazier Group Architects and by Karen Dry, president of Garrett Interiors Inc.

Each student will receive a sample set of blueprints, a handbook and a gift bag with such items as an architect scale ruler, pencil and tape measure with level.

The seminar cost is $85 for BIA and Women's Council members and $95 for nonmembers. Both men and women may attend.

Proceeds will support the Women's Council Educational Scholarship Fund.

To attend the seminar or to join the Women's Council, call (909) 396-9993 or visit www.womenscouncil.net.
