Spanish should not be a requirement for job in the school district

I was outraged that the Simi Valley Unified School District is advertising jobs and telling people that if they don't speak Spanish not to apply.

There is no reason that Spanish-speaking people cannot learn English. There are many programs available. We are an English-speaking country.

If the local school board approves of this policy, I feel they should be recalled. I am not sure it is even legal. Jack Brewer Simi Valley

Editor's Note: Officials from the Simi Valley Unified School District this week denied the claims made in last week's letter to the Acorn, stating that a job applicant had never been turned away because he or she could not speak Spanish.

According to Don Gaudioso, superintendent in charge of personnel services, there are only two jobs in the district where a firm grasp of Spanish is desirable, and neither one was being applied for by Mr. Duvos. Mr. Duvos has since been asked to come in again and submit his application.
