Grenade found in garbage brings out bomb squad
Explosive found to be inactive

Police responded to a call from the Colony Apartments last Friday after a maintenance worker saw what appeared to be a grenade in a dumpster on the property.

According to Sgt. David Livingstone of the Simi Valley Police Department, the bomb squad determined the item was an inactive military hand grenade that posed no threat to the public.

"It was inert," Livingstone said. "We just took all of the precautions we could. We treated it like it was live."

Members of the Simi PD, Ventura County Sheriff's Department and bomb squad contained the apartment building at 1750 First St. around 3 p.m.

Both sides of First Street were temporarily closed as a precaution. No arrests were made.
