Scholars given research opportunity

Four Ventura County students spent the summer doing hands-on research projects as Amgen Scholars at U.S. universities.

Dmitriy Kolodin from Simi Valley studied at UCLA.

May Lou from Westlake Village and Joseph Raleigh from Newbury Park each performed research on different topics at UCSD.

Susan Massey from Thousand Oaks participated at University of Washington.

Students in the Amgen Scholars program are given the opportunity to do research beyond what may be possible as part of an undergraduate education. The 2007 Amgen Scholars represented nearly 100 colleges and universities across 36 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The selected Amgen Scholars took part in university research projects and gained hands-on lab experience. All of the participants attended a three-day symposium in Lake Tahoe, Calif., to discuss their research projects and hear from scientists in academia and industry. Topics presented included the drug development process, discovery research and drug manufacturing.

Students received financial support at each university in addition to travel and accommodations at the symposium.
