Sobriety checkpoint scheduled

The Simi Valley Police Department will conduct a licensing and sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city sometime within the next two weeks.

The goals of the checkpoint are to arrest drivers who are driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to ensure that all motorists are properly licensed.

Drivers passing through the checkpoint will be delayed briefly while their driving status is verified. Other observed violations, such as unfastened seatbelts and open containers of alcohol, will be enforced.

This will be the third licensing and sobriety checkpoint of the year and the last in a series of four checkpoints funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Over the Labor Day weekend, 93 drivers were arrested in Ventura County on suspicion of driving under the influence as part of law enforcement's Avoid the 14 crackdown- a 23 percent drop from the Memorial Day weekend crackdown.
