Tuesday is 'National Night Out'
Message of event is clear: Look out for one another

People across the United States will come together to show that they want to keep crime and violence out of their neighborhoods from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7.

The 24th National Night Out celebration is the largest anti-crime event in the country. Last year, more than 35 million people participated from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada and military bases worldwide.

The city of Simi Valley encourages its residents to organize a neighborhood party or similar gathering for National Night Out. Residents are also encouraged to turn on their porch lights, as outdoor lighting is considered one of the easiest and most effective ways to deter crime in a neighborhood.

The event will also give neighbors a change to get to know each other better, have fun and explore how they might work together to improve the safety and quality of their neighborhood.

More people watching out for one another and calling the police when warranted will make Simi Valley a safer place to live.

For more information on National Night out or starting a neighborhood watch program, call the Simi Valley Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at (805) 583-6908
