All new Americans should learn to speak English
I'm burning mad. A new law requires districtwide notices to be bilingual.

When my family came to this country, no one helped them, they said "learn English or go back to Ireland."

You see my people spoke Gaelic. We were called names because we were "dirty Irishmen." And our choice of church was called names.

We were still being beaten when I was a girl. I caught three big boys picking on a wee girl, beating her on the head with a tin lunch box yelling, "we'll make a nun out of you."

I took on all three, older then I and beat the tar out of them, they ran like a fire was after them, and there was me.

You see, the wee first-grader was my kid sister. I would have taken on an army.

I believe that if my people had to learn, why not others?

It just makes it hard on our teachers.

It also costs our school board time, money and cuts back on education. I should know- my daughter teaches high school.

Don't get me wrong, I love all people, but we all work hard for our money and our schools do with less and less.

Then we sit with our finger in our mouth and wonder why.

Wake up everyone, the story goes deeper and we all know it.

If I went to Mexico would they do the same for me? We cannot even go there safely can we?

I have friends from Mexico who work hard and speak English. I love them and all other races. I also love the Acorn. M.C. Molloy Simi Valley
