Reader offers some thoughts to ponder concerning patriotism We are patriotic today, honoring those who have given their lives in service to our country. Allegiance to our country is due not because of happenstance of birth, nor because of the sentimentality of loved ones in uniform. After all, Germans were patriotic to the Nazi Regime, but history writes their allegiance as demoralized, horrendous. Patriotism is vanity unless founded on truth. Our national identity and heritage were founded on eternal truth, the inalienable right of every individual man's freedom of mind and conscience, especially in matters relating to his relationship to his Creator. Guarding the individual's sacred nature, the Constitution and Bill of Rights express restrictions, checks and balances on overzealous government. These inspired documents guard this balance through dichotomy: culture of church and state, presuming citizenry fruitful in civil government rooted in wisdom from communion with the Divine. As we honor our loved ones who gave their lives for a national interest, let us beware neglecting the defense of freedom at home. When was the last time you reviewed the Bill of Rights? Do you teach them to your children? When was the last time you sought Divine Wisdom? Or voted? Eternal vigilance is ever the price of freedom. Who said that? America, keep the Bill of Rights alive. Do not take them for granted. Shall we lose our foundational moorings? Shall those we honor today have died in vain? Marylin George Simi Valley |
