DIRTY WORK- Above, Big Springs Elementary
School sixth-graders, from left, Keala Freeman,
Kendra Dowhan and Elizabeth Becerra, all 11,
pack dirt around a newly planted dwarf Southern
magnolia last Saturday as part of their Arbor Day project. At right, Kristen Antillon and her daughter,
Kayla Thomas, 12, team up to place fresh soil
around their tree on Ft. Davis Street. Scores of
students and their parents took part in the planting of 24 trees around the Simi campus, with
a 25th tree planned for the near future. The last tree will be planted in memory of Jake Lucas, who
was killed Feb. 12 in a dirt-bike accident.
