Places of faith
Evangelical church offers a new beginning

IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers LITERAL VIEW- The New Beginnings Christian Fellowship first opened its doors in 1973.
Editor's note: This is the first installment of a biweekly series highlighting different Simi Valley houses of worship, exploring the congregations' beliefs and practices and their views on life and salvation in general.

Questions of faith (answered by the Rev. Rod Ritchie):

What is the purpose of life?

"Man's chief end is to know God and enjoy him forever."

How do you interpret the Bible?

"When you use the word 'evangelical,' you believe in the literal truth of the Bible. The historical view of the Bible is accepted. There was a Noah (and the Ark) and then Daniel in the lion's den. There are some alternate views as far as the seven days of creation- is that literal days? There's room for discussion in that area."

What must man do to get into heaven?

"The New Testament view: A person with a personal relationship with Jesus would go to heaven"

What is the role of the church in the community?

"To add value to the citizens of the community. To give them purpose, encouragement and support in raising their families and support in being good workers on the job and responsible citizens- caring about the community and the things that are important to a community."

What is the church's view on gay rights and abortion?

"We take a more conservative view but we love people. To paraphrase, 'God is not for divorce, but he's for divorced people.' We support people. We welcome them and affirm them."

What is women's role in the church?

"My wife and I are copastors in the church. She's an ordained minister and very competent- I like to think even more competent than me.

"Many churches in town have no problem with that, yet others do. It's amazing to me a woman can be a senator or Supreme Court justice or potentially president of the United States but not a preacher. I don't think the Bible supports that but there are those that think it does. I would disagree with them but I wouldn't be disagreeable."

New Beginnings Christian Fellowship is at 2864 Sycamore Drive, Simi Valley. Phone: (805) 522-3555.
