Mount Sinai Holocaust Remembrance Day program held this Sunday in Simi
Residents of all faith invited to attend emotional event

Survivors of the Holocaust and liberators who freed them will be the special guests at a communitywide Yom Ha'Shoah event scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday, April 15 at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, 6150 Mount Sinai Drive, Simi Valley.

The program will commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day. Everyone, whether Jewish or of another faith, is invited to attend. Children are especially welcome.

Attendees will receive a torn yellow ribbon to symbolize the losses of the Jewish community in the Holocaust.

Moderating the program will be Daisy Miller of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education, an organization established by Steven Spielberg to record the experiences of more than 50,000 Holocaust survivors. Miller is a child survivor and spent the war years hidden in Italy.

Other participants include Bent Lerno, a Danish survivor, and Sandy Lebman, an American liberator.

The program will conclude at the Grove of the Righteous Rescuers, an area Mount Sinai established to recognize the 40 nations whose citizens helped Jewish people escape Hitler's regime.

"Integral to our mission at Mount Sinai is to serve the living and show reverence for life," said Len Lawrence, general manager of Mount Sinai. "There are few more courageous living people than those who lived to tell the story of bondage and liberation resulting from the Holocaust, and we are honored that they will share their stories with the community at this Mount Sinai Yom Ha'Shoah event."

Mount Sinai is also inaugurating the Mount Sinai Shoah Quilt. People are asked to create one square that will become part of a finished tapestry that exemplifies their memory or understanding of the Holocaust.

A variety of art materials can be used for the square, from needlework or embroidery to indelible markers. The squares will be sewn together to create a quilt that will be displayed for the first time at Yom Ha'Shoah next year.

Mount Sinai will provide the fabric for individual squares.
