2 area students honored by B&G Club
Duo recognized at annual awards luncheon

The Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley honored award winners and installed a new board of directors at the annual Recognition Luncheon on Feb. 8 at the Grand Vista Hotel in Simi Valley.
The 2006 Youths of the Year, Jasmine Powell and Quentin Wetherholt, both gave speeches.
Wetherholt has attended the club for almost two years, during which time he has participated in numerous activities including pool, chess, football and basketball. He is a frequent visitor to the Homework Center.
He is a sixthgrader at Sycamore Elementary School where he earns excellent grades and participates in many extracurricular activities, including outdoor school and the Communication for Youth Institute. He is also a member of Samurai Spirit Martial Arts.
Wetherholt's aspirations include attending USC and afterwards entering medical school to become a surgeon.
Powell, a senior at Simi Valley High, has maintained academic excellence in her schoolwork and has been recognized for her achievements and extracurricular activities with awards and certificates.

She has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley since 2001 and volunteered in the Junior Leader program for two years. She continues to serve as a paid part-time staff member and has worked for the club for the last two years.
In that time she has helped with events, including the garage sale fundraiser and the annual Family Dinner and Talent Show.
Powell plans to pursue a college degree in neuroscience and philology.

Employee of the Year: Bruce Yi, teen and outreach director
Business of the Year: Waste Management
Volunteer of the Year: Shari Schultz, New Directions event planning
President Award: Mary Bibb, planning commission, city of Simi Valley
Shining Star Award: Countrywide Home Loans and Century Telephone Systems
Rookie of the Year Award: Ron Chambers and Roy Jones, Simi Valley Police Department
Special Recognition Award: Steve Reder of Maverick's Barbecue Restaurant
Invisible Hero Award:J e r r y DiCanio of NBC Studios
The new board of directors includes Leanne Alva, Greg Barnes, Glen Becerra, Ron Chambers, Jerry DiCanio, Sally Grant, Dan Hill, Deb Holler, Sterling Johnson, Roy Jones, Daryl Kleintob, Tom Mackel Jr., Janet Parr, Fred Thomas, Scott Tignac and Vickie Walluck.
