5 Simi students hope to 'reflect' well at statewide creativity competition
Categories include visual arts, dance and film production

The Simi Valley Unified School District is shining bright with five students from different grade levels nominated to attend the state level Reflections contest.

The program, which is a national PTAsponsored contest, encourages students to express themselves creatively and pursue artistic expression in one of six focus areas.

The categories are literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography and film/video production.

"Parents, teachers and community members all play a critical role in fostering a positive learning environment for children. Artistic exploration and expression enhance and develop intellectual, social and physical skills," said Betty Roark, the 12th District PTA Reflections chairperson.

Started in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson, the Reflections program has attracted more than 10 million participants since its inception. The program emphasizes creative participation over winning, according to PTA officials.

"The goal of the program is to celebrate the gifts and talents of all students and give those who have never had an opportunity to experiment and explore their creativity a chance to do so," Roark said.

The 12th District PTA, which includes Ventura, Conejo Valley, Hueneme, Oxnard, Oak Park, Pleasant Valley, Simi and Moorpark school districts, received more than 3,800 entries this year. The first-place winners in each category and grade division were invited to participate in the next round of the contest.

Out of the 23 first-place prizes, Simi Valley students walked away with five. Carly Shukiar of White Oak Elementary, Katherine Szymanski of Wood Ranch Elementary, Venetha Sankar of Madera Elementary, Hailey Kreitzman of Big Springs Elementary and Clara Kim of Simi Valley High School received awards for their entries and were invited to participate in the statewide contest.

Students who win at the state level will be invited to participate in the national contest.
