UCC hosts presentation on evolution and faith

The United Church of Christ in Simi Valley will present "Evolution, Faith and the Human Spirit" as part of its 10 a.m. service Sunday, Feb. 11.

Blaine O'Connor and Stewart Bechman will give presentations, followed by a group discussion.

O'Connor is a professor of philosophy at Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar. He studied theology at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley and is an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church.

Bechman is a local college lecturer and speaker and has led educational programs on Charles Darwin and the history of Darwin's theory of natural selection.

He holds several advanced degrees in the sciences. Bechman has also served as the co-president of Atheists United of Los Angeles for the past five years.

Evolution Sunday is sponsored by the Clergy Letter Project, a collection of more than 10,400 Christian clergypersons who have signed a letter asserting that Christianity and modern evolutionary science need not be at odds with one another.
