Youth Council looking to make a splash
Today is final day for students to submit applications
By Avi Rutschman avi@theacorn.com

The Simi Valley Youth Council is hoping high school students will be bathed in enthusiasm Feb. 22 by "Make A Splash," the council's sixth annual Youth Summit.

"Our theme shows our desire to encourage students to make an impact in their communities," said Samantha Agrabrite, youth council coordinator.

Sponsored by the youth council and the city of Simi Valley, the event will take place at the Rancho Santa Susana Community Center and will include lunch with local dignitaries, workshops, an improvisation troupe and a keynote speaker.

The improv group Straight Up will help students explore social concerns and possible solutions with improvisation and acting exercises, Agrabrite said. The group participated in last year's Youth Summit.

The keynote address will be delivered by Stu Cabe, a motivational speaker who specializes in training students and educators to take active roles in defining their school climate.

Agrabrite said the benefits a student can enjoy from Youth Summit go far beyond a day off from school.

"It's a great event for the students to come to. It is one day out of the school year, an excused absence, and it can really kick start their interest in getting involved in the community," Agrabrite said.

Originally developed in 2001 to encourage high school students to be more actively involved in the community, the Youth Summit has evolved into a template from which city leaders can learn about issues facing the area's youth.

"When the students come to this event, the information that they've shared with the local dignitaries is always taken into consideration whenever important decisions are made," Agrabrite said.

The event is open to all Simi Valley high school students. The Youth Council has already received 45 applications.

The deadline to submit an application is today, Feb. 2.
